Honoring Dr. King
My students have been involved in various activities to learn about Dr. King. I hope they will always remember to stand up for their strong beliefs and live by the wise words of MLK.
Students learned about Dr. King and wrote a Subject Predicate Poem. While reviewing grammar, they wrote beautiful poems that told the story of King and the brave acts and racism he endured.
Also, each student (some worked in pairs) worked to complete a square with a quote from Dr. King. While looking for quotes, my students were introduced to many of King’s poignant and wise words.
Let’s not forget an escape room. Students worked hard to solve four puzzles to break out of a digital escape room. We had a lot of “escape artists!”
Lastly, some students entered a coloring contest. We had some amazing final products.
I’m thrilled to share my love and admiration for Dr. King with my students. We can learn so many pertinent life lessons from him.

Classroom Set Up
Wow, teachers! It’s that time again! We are facing a lot of unknowns in our profession, but one thing is for certain- we have to have our classrooms organized and ready for some engaging teaching.
I moved classrooms this year. I will still be teaching 6th grade writing, however. I’m excited about the sinks, more space, and (yes) I have a window. Yay!!
I’ve enjoyed watching my room transform from a pile of things all over the room to what it is now. My theme? Just bright, happy colors.
One thing I did to spruce up some old pieces was paint them black with my favorite milk paint. I have put the links below for the paint as well as the other items I used. This paint does wonders and is so easy to apply. To prevent streak marks, I used foam brushes.

A Doorbell in a Classroom?
Yea, I know this sounds crazy. However, I’d seen some teachers posting about having a doorbell in their classroom for noise control or an an attention getter, and I wanted to give it a try. I’m so glad I did.
I bought this doorbell and absolutely love it! It gives you choices as to which doorbell chime you want. There are a lot to pick from and four different volume levels. It was super easy to set up in my classroom. Now, I know you’re asking…does this thing work as you intended. The answer to that question is YES, it does.
When I play the chime in my classroom, I’ve set the expectation for students to be looking at me and for all noise to stop when they hear this sound. Of course it took a couple of times before students accomplished this, but now it works like a charm.
