Time Saving Teacher Tip: Batch Planning & Grading

Posted on September 17, 2024 By PassionateAboutTeaching 1 Comment on Time Saving Teacher Tip: Batch Planning & Grading

Time-Saving Teacher Tip:

As a teacher, I NEVER felt like I had enough time. Our days are packed with lesson planning, grading, meetings, and, of course, teaching. It can often feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish everything on our to-do lists (which always grows longer and longer). Here’s one effective tip that made a BIG difference for me: Batch Planning and Grading.

What is batch planning and batch grading? This is where you group similar tasks together and complete them in DEDICATED blocks of time.

BATCH PLANNING

Batch planning involves setting aside a specific time each week to plan all your lessons. Instead of planning day-by-day or even hour-by-hour, dedicate a couple of hours at the start or end of your week to outline all your lessons. This approach has several benefits:

1. Consistency: By planning your lessons in one block of time, you can ensure that your lessons flow logically from one to the next, creating a cohesive learning experience for your students.

2. Efficiency: You enter a “planning mode” mindset, which helps you work more efficiently. You’re not constantly stopping and starting, which can waste time and mental energy.

3. Flexibility: With the week’s lessons planned out, you have the flexibility to adjust as needed without the stress of having to create entirely new content on the go.

 BATCH GRADING

Similarly, batch grading means setting aside a block of time to grade all assignments at once rather than grading a few here and there throughout the week. Here’s why this can be a game-changer:

1. Focus: When you dedicate a specific time for grading, you can focus more fully on assessing your students’ work, leading to more consistent and fair grading.

2. Time Management: Grading in batches allows you to better manage your time. You can set limits on how long you spend on each assignment and avoid the trap of over-grading.

3. Reduced Stress: Knowing that you have dedicated grading time can reduce the stress of feeling like you need to grade everything immediately. This can also help you maintain a better work-life balance.

How do I Implement Batch Planning and Grading?

To get started with batch planning and grading, follow these steps:

1. Schedule Dedicated Time: Block out specific times in your calendar each week for planning and grading. Treat these blocks as non-negotiable appointments.

2. Prepare Your Materials: Before your planning or grading session, gather ALL the necessary materials. This might include your curriculum guide, student assignments, and any resources you need. I also found myself pulling up all the tabs of online sites I used for planning as well.

3. Minimize Distractions (yes, I know this is hard to do): Find a quiet space where you can work without interruptions. Turn off notifications on your devices to stay focused.

4. Set Goals: Before you start, set clear goals for what you want to accomplish in each session. This could be planning a week’s worth of lessons or grading a specific set of assignments.

5. Be sure and take breaks: To maintain your sanity, energy and focus, take short breaks during your planning or grading sessions. A quick walk or a few minutes of stretching can make a big difference. Enjoy that cup of tea, coffee, or specialty drink that brings you happiness.

Batch planning and grading really helped me manage my time more effectively (I just wish I would have done it sooner). I felt more organized and much less stressed out (which who doesn’t need that?)!

Give batch planning and grading a try, and see how it changes your teaching routine (and STRESS). You might be surprised at how much more manageable your workload becomes.

Happy teaching!

Tech Tip Thursday

Posted on August 29, 2024 By PassionateAboutTeaching No Comments on Tech Tip Thursday

Well, it’s happened to all of us that are online teachers (or even in the on site classroom). You’re in the middle of a class and WHAM, your Internet goes out. This happened to me last night. Yes, it was extremely frustrating! However, I took some deep breaths and was able to thankfully connect to my hot spot! Yes, they are worth the extra money (in my opinion)!

With my hot spot, I was able to reconnect and continue teaching (thank goodness).  In times like this, it’s easy to get frazzled. I was not only reminded to stay calm, connect, and continue teaching away but that a temporary loss of the Internet is just that—temporary.

I hope in the busyness of teaching, you’re reminded today to stay calm and TEACH ON. We can get so inundated with all the tasks around us that we forget what’s truly important.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In case you’re wondering what company I teach with? Outschool, and I love it!

If you decide to look into teaching online for them, I’d be honored if you used my referrel code: 8UTpiW2m or link: Outschool Teacher Link

If you’re a parent looking for online classes (they have tons to choose from), use this code: 8UTpiW2m or link: Outschool Parent Link (if you use my code or link, you’ll get $20 in Outschool credit to spend).

Wishing you all an amazing (and calm) day!

Happy Teaching!

Happy Friday! Enjoy Your Weekend!

Posted on February 10, 2023February 9, 2023 By PassionateAboutTeaching 2 Comments on Happy Friday! Enjoy Your Weekend!
Weekend Ready

Happy Friday! It’s the weekend, and that means it’s time to relax and unwind. But sometimes, it can be hard to find the motivation to do something productive. Here are a few tips to help you get motivated and make the most of your weekend.

First, start by setting goals. Decide what you want to accomplish and make a plan. Break down the tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and schedule them into your weekend. This will give you a sense of purpose and direction.

Second, set aside some time for self-care. It’s important to take care of yourself, both mentally and physically. Take a long bath, go get a cup of tea or coffee (☕️)read a book, go for a walk, or just spend some time doing something that relaxes you.

Third, find activities that make you happy. Whether it’s playing your favorite sport, crafting something, DIY project, cooking, or just watching your favorite movie (yes, I love me some Netflix), make sure to do something that brings you joy. 🥰

Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s okay if you don’t accomplish everything you set out to do. Just do your best, and don’t forget to have some fun!

I hope these tips help you find the motivation you need to make the most of your weekend. Have a great one!

Until next time,

How Do We Show Students We Care?

Posted on February 9, 2023 By PassionateAboutTeaching No Comments on How Do We Show Students We Care?

How do we show our students we care?

As teachers, we all know it’s very important to show our students that we care about them. Why? Doing so can help create a positive learning environment where students feel safe, respected, and supported. Our students are dealing with A LOT these days. They need to feel that at least one person is in their court.

Here are a few ways that teachers can show their students that they care:

  1. Get to know them: Take time to get to know your students on an individual level. Ask them questions about their interests, hobbies, and goals. Showing that you care about their interests can help build meaningful relationships with your students.
  2. Be available: Let your students know that you are available to help them. Make yourself available to answer questions or just talk about their day. This can help create a sense of trust between you and your students.
  3. Show appreciation: Recognize your students’ achievements, both big and small. Give genuine compliments, encourage them to keep trying, and remind them of their potential. This can help build their self-confidence and make them feel valued.
  4. Show flexibility: Be flexible with assignments, deadlines, and expectations. Show your students that you understand that everyone learns differently and that you want to help them succeed.

By taking small steps to show your students that you care, you can create an environment of trust and support that can help your students learn and grow.

Happy teaching!

Back to the Basics in Reading

Posted on February 7, 2023 By PassionateAboutTeaching No Comments on Back to the Basics in Reading
Word Work

Back to the basics in reading? Yes! I work as a reading and writing interventionist in a middle school. We might tend to think at this age, our students should know all the vowel sounds, blends, digraphs, consonant clusters, vowel rules, etc. Well, they don’t (and for many reasons, which is a whole other blog post). 😂

Therefore, I’ve gone back to the basics. Yes, even in middle school! We all need a refresher every now and then, especially when it comes to the basics, right?! Phonics is an important building block for a strong foundation in reading, writing, and language arts. That’s why it’s essential to go back to the basics of phonics to gain a better understanding of how language works. As teachers, we know there are HUGE debates right now between leveled literacy and the science of reading. I find that incorporating both into my class is extremely beneficial for my students.

What Is Phonics?

Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing that focuses on the relationship between sounds and letters. It involves teaching students to recognize and use the sounds that letters and groups of letters make. This is an important skill for reading, as it allows students to decode words and gain a better understanding of them.

Why Is Phonics Important?

Phonics provides students with the fundamentals of reading and writing and helps them to understand the relationship between sounds and letters. This knowledge can be used to help decode unknown words and to increase fluency. Additionally, phonics can help students to spell correctly and improve their overall writing skills.

How Can We Go Back to the Basics with Phonics?

Going back to the basics of phonics can be done in a few different ways. One way is to review the sounds that each letter makes and the different combinations of letters that create a particular sound. Just today, we worked on digraphs and long/short vowel sounds. We practiced reading words out loud and breaking them down into individual sounds. Finally, have them practice writing words from their sounds, as this will help them gain a better understanding of how the sounds and letters work together.

Overall, phonics is an important building block for literacy skills. Going back to the basics with phonics can help your students to gain a better understanding of the relationship between sounds and letters, which will ultimately help them to become better readers and writers.

Until next time,

Tips to Staying Motivated

Tips to Staying Motivated

If you’ve been on any social media platform these days, there’s A LOT of negativity and talk about quitting the field of education. I get it!  I’ve taught since 1994, and it’s a totally different rodeo these days – some days seem unbearable. How can we stay motivated with all of this constantly surrounding us?

Here’s a few tips that help me:

  1. Set a goal (big or small) and visualize yourself achieving it – Visualizing your end goal can help motivate you to stay focused and motivated.
  2. Make a plan – Break down your goal into smaller, more manageable pieces and create a plan to help you stay on track.
  3. Take breaks – Breaks are essential for staying motivated. Make sure to take regular breaks throughout your day (in teaching, this might just be a minute of breathing to decompress) and reward yourself with something enjoyable after completing a task (even just a cup of tea or coffee after school is rewarding). Take “mental days” off when needed. We all deserve a day to ourselves!
  4. Find a colleague (don’t be on an island by yourself) – Finding someone to collaborate with can help keep you motivated and accountable for reaching your goals.
  5. Stay organized – Create a system for organizing your work, students’ papers (graded/ungraded), test materials, IEP’s, 504’s and more that will keep you on track and motivated.

We are teaching in a tough world – no doubt about it! I hope you’ll find these tips helpful! Most importantly, take care of you! There are many years I forgot to do this, and my health suffered! You’ve got this!

Until next time,
