Grammar has always always a favorite subject of mine to teach. If you’re old like me 😂, then you remember diagramming sentences in school (shows my age). I was good at it; therefore, I liked it. Now math, that’s another topic! Moving on!

I have created many grammar products to use in the classroom. These products are tried and tested. My students always enjoyed completing these activities.

Remembering and Teaching: September 11 Educational Resources

Posted on September 3, 2024September 3, 2024 By PassionateAboutTeaching No Comments on Remembering and Teaching: September 11 Educational Resources

Remembering and Teaching September 11: Why Teaching About 9/11 Matters…

As we approach another anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, it’s important to reflect on the significance of this day and how it has shaped our world. Educators have a unique responsibility to help their students understand the historical context, emotional impact, and ongoing effects of 9/11.

For many students, September 11, 2001, is a historical event they didn’t experience firsthand. This gap in personal experience can make it challenging to grasp the gravity and emotional weight of the day. Even though it was always difficult and emotional to teach the horrific events of this tragic day, I knew it was important because it’s sadly a HUGE part of America’s history.

Teaching about September 11 is not just about recounting historical facts; it’s about helping students understand the profound impact the event had on individuals, communities, and the world.

I created two products that I used in my classroom to help me teach the events of this heart-breaking day: 9/11 Context Clues Task Cards and a 9/11 Choice Board that includes multiple activities. Through these activities, my students became not only aware of the day’s events, but how much America came together and stood united as ONE.

If interested in either of these products for your learners, check them out my clicking on the images below.

Together, we can ensure that the lessons of September 11 continue to resonate with future generations.

Analogies are Awesome!

Posted on February 21, 2023February 20, 2023 By PassionateAboutTeaching No Comments on Analogies are Awesome!

Analogies are awesome! As we all know, an analogy is a comparison between two different objects, people, or ideas that share some common characteristics. Why teach them? Analogies are important because they help us make sense of the world around us. For example, if we wanted to explain how a car works, we could use an analogy of a bicycle. We could explain that the car has an engine like a bicycle has a pedal, and the car has a steering wheel like a bicycle has handlebars.

Analogies are also useful for making complex topics easier to understand. For example, if you were trying to explain the structure of the internet, you could use an analogy of a highway system. You could explain that the internet is made up of highways and side roads, and that data travels along these pathways like cars travel along a highway.

Analogies can also be used to create vivid images in our minds, which can help us remember information more easily. For example, if you wanted to remember the order of the planets in the solar system, you could create an analogy of a string of beads. You could imagine that each bead represents a planet, and the order of the beads is the order of the planets.

Overall, analogies are an important tool that can be used to explain complex topics, create vivid images, and help us remember information. They can be a great way to make learning fun and engaging, and can help us understand the world around us in a more meaningful way.

My students always love analogies and seeing the connection and relationship between various objects, people, and more. If needing an analogy resource for your classroom, I’ve got your covered:

New CANVA Feature!

Posted on December 22, 2022 By PassionateAboutTeaching 2 Comments on New CANVA Feature!
Created with CANVA

Check out this new CANVA feature! 👏Teachers, we already know how awesome CANVA is, right?! I use it for everything…blog images, worksheets for class, PowerPoints for teaching, designs for social media, and the list goes on! However, they have released a new mind-blowing feature- AI (artificial intelligence) on their DOCS template. The possibilities with this are innumerable!

BENEFITS OF AI IN THE CLASSROOM

✏️ As a writing teacher, one of the most common problems I observe with students is getting started on a paper (writer’s block). This could be used to give students ideas on how to start a paper. Why not take the piece of writing and go through it, together, pointing out the strengths of the writing or what could be added to make it better? In addition, teachers can also have students research and validate the reliability and validity of the piece before them. This certainly covers important objectives, concepts and, if in Texas, your TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). The options are endless! 👍🏻

HOW CAN WE EMBRACE AI IN THE CLASSROOM?

It was actually a student of mine that first introduced the capability of the AI application to me. I couldn’t believe it!!! Once I checked it out, I knew there would be differing opinions. I knew there would be some that point to the plagiarism aspect. However, I think we need to embrace and discuss this with our students in the classroom. It’s here (like it or not), our students know about it, and we can use it to their benefit.

Check out this video from @Algebramadesimple speaking of this new CANVA feature below. Let me know your thoughts and how you would use this in your classroom.

While on TikTok the other day, one of the best ways I saw AI being used was having the program write a lesson plan. 👀 Ponder on that for a minute, teachers. It sure sounds like this might not only benefit our students but us as well! Wow!!

Halloween Task Cards

Posted on October 13, 2022October 12, 2022 By PassionateAboutTeaching No Comments on Halloween Task Cards

With Fall Harvest 🎃(Halloween) around the corner, you might be searching for a fun and engaging classroom activity. This is ALWAYS a favorite of mine (and my students). Use these ready-made Halloween-Themed Task Cards to practice using context clues to figure out vocabulary.

There are so many ways to use these task cards – play SCOOT, hang them around the room and let partners complete them together, have a race with partners completing the cards, or my very favorite is KICK ME. Tape the cards on the backs of your students (yes, they freak out when you do this). The anticipation is enough to get the whole class into this.

Turn on some fall/Halloween music, and students walk around and answer the questions on the backs of one another. Lay out some ground rules, of course (the first one – NO KICKING allowed). Also, they have to stand still if someone is reading their card, have someone else read their own card, no running, and do your best to get as far as you can before time is up. I usually stopped after 3 students brought me all of their answers. All of their answers had to be correct to be a winner. 🎉

You can purchase these task cards HERE.

This product includes:

  • 28 Halloween-Themed Context Clues Task Cards (black and white)
  • 28 Halloween-Themed Context Clues Task Cards (beautiful fall colors)
  • Student Response Sheet
  • Answer Key

Let’s Play “Kick Me!”

What Have Customers Said:

“5.0 Extremely satisfied: Excellent resource, students enjoyed it.”

5.0 “Such a fun activity for learning context clues!”
Happy Fall Y’ll! Until next time…
